A spatially explicit land surface phenology data product for science, monitoring and natural resources management applications

چکیده
Land surface phenology (LSP) characterizes episodes of greening and browning of the vegetated land surface from remote sensing imagery. LSP is of interest for quantification and monitoring of crop yield, wildfire fuel accumulation, vegetation condition, ecosystem response and resilience to climate variability and change. Deriving LSP represents an effort for end users and existing global products may not accommodate conditions in Australia, a country with a dry climate and high rainfall variability. To fill this information gap we developed the Australian LSP Product in contribution to AusCover/Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN). We describe the product's algorithm and information content consisting of metrics that characterize LSP greening and browning episodes of the vegetated land surface. Our product allows tracking LSP metrics over time and thereby quantifying interand intraannual variability across Australia. We demonstrate the metrics' response to ENSO-driven climate variability. Lastly, we discuss known limitations of the current product and future development plans. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A GIS-based integrative approach for land use optimization in a semi-arid watershed
The proper use of natural resources can preserve these valuable assets. In line with the management of natural resources, land use optimization can be highly useful. The aim of the present study is to propose an appropriate integrative model for optimized allocation of lands for surface runoff and sediment load minimization and net income maximization in Bayg watershed, Iran. In this study, fiv...
متن کاملDesign and Development of Early Warning System for Desertification and Land Degradation
Early warning systems are key components of strategies to reduce risk. This research, by adopting a systematic approach in the management of the risk of desertification and by including previously developed models and systems, offers an integrated efficient structure in terms of early warning for the risk of desertification as a pilot system for semi-arid areas of west Golestan Province in IRAN...
متن کاملImpact of urban land cover change on land surface temperature
The rapid growth in urban population is seen to create a need for the development of more urban infrastructures. In order to meet this need, natural surfaces such as vegetation are been replaced with non-vegetated surfaces such as asphalt and bricks which has the ability to absorb heat and release it later. This change in land cover is seen to increase the land surface temperature. Previous stu...
متن کاملInvestigation of Habitat Characteristics and Phenology of Five Range Species in Highlands of Kashan, Iran
Knowledge on habitat characteristics and nature of regional vegetation inrangelands is a prerequisite for any planning and proper range management along withsustainable development of renewable natural resources. Rangelands in southern andwestern highlands of Kashan, Iran are of good vegetation diversity but unfortunately, palatable and desirable species are endangered in recent years. This rese...
متن کاملSpatial variability of some soil properties for site specific farming in northern Iran
Evaluating agricultural land management practices requires knowledge of soil spatial variability and understanding their relationships. Spatial distributions for fourteen soil physical and chemical properties were examined in a wheat field in Sorkhankalateh district, in Golestan province, Iran. 101 soil samples at the distances of 5m, 10m and 20m as nested grid were collected at the depth of 0-...
